États Généraux du Logement

Marseille

Jean-Christophe Masson was invited as a keynote speaker at the workshop “Fighting Against Unworthy Housing” during the États Généraux du Logement in Marseille in November 2022.

Compared to other major French cities, Marseille is notably behind in terms of both the quantity and quality of public transportation and sustainable mobility. The current focus is on working with the existing infrastructure to transform the city in order to meet the new uses, expectations, and needs of its residents, as well as contemporary urban development constraints.

Given the sociodemographic changes and environmental challenges, this workshop aimed to explore new approaches for reshaping the city to develop high-quality housing and an adapted residential offer. This included land use and planning strategies, the “15-minute city” concept, bioclimatic architecture, housing quality and comfort, functional diversity, building reversibility and modularity, managing building obsolescence, shared spaces, reducing soil artificialization, and public facilities and neighborhood services. The goal was to identify the levers to activate, conditions to meet, and challenges to overcome to support this transition.
